Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)  For Sale - The Staples Center Anschutz Entertainment Group, or AEG, the owner of the Staples Center and the L.A. Live entertainment complex, Los Angeles Kings and L.A. Galaxy, has been put up for sale.
Run by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz, the company announced that it is seeking a buyer for its AEG subsidiary. The company has been negotiating to build a football stadium in downtown L.A. in the hopes of luring an NFL team from another city. These plans are expected to proceed as usual.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that he has known about the potential sale of Anschutz Entertainment Group "for some time," saying that he did not expect a change in ownership to affect the plans for a NFL stadium in downtown L.A.
Is a statement, Villaraigosa said that he spoke with AEG President Tim Leiweke and company owner Philip Anschutz "on a regular basis" and had been kept in the loop.
Taxpayer interests would be "well-protected" in the event of a sale. "Whoever steps into the shoes of the previous owner would have to fulfill all the responsibilities and obligations as the current owner," City Councilwoman Jan Perry says. "The city has been well-negotiated and well-protected."
