SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CA (Catholic Online) - The competitions are designed to test the students' understanding and skill of math, engineering, and science through hands-on activities such as web design for wind turbines and bridge building. The "Wind Energy Challenge" winners will advance to compete at the statewide championship in May, where they have the potential to move on to represent California in a national competition in June. Students competed in earlier contests in order to qualify for the regional MESA Day at Chapman. MESA is an academic preparation program for educationally disadvantaged students to help them stay in school and gain academic success after high school. The organization hopes to expose students to a college setting by hosting the events at college campuses. Roughly two-thirds of MESA graduates wind up majoring in math, science, or engineering at college level. © 2012, Catholic Online.
