LA Archdiocese Goes Green; Launches First Environmental Committee To 'green' Parishes

Archdiocese of Los Angeles (www.archdiocese.la/)

Archdiocese to "go green".......

On October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology, Cardinal Roger Mahony announced that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will "go green" through a newly established Creation Sustainability Ministry.

"We have been given the responsibility to care for our land and environment for future generations," said Cardinal Mahony. "Our new Creation Sustainability Ministry will help each of our 288 parishes to go green, so that our Catholic community can help to preserve these great gifts God has given us."

The newly created ministry will be spearheaded by the Creation Sustainability Committee comprised of green-minded Catholic parishioners, priests, community members, environmentalists and social justice minded people from throughout the Archdiocese. The committee will assist parishes in becoming more sustainable. It will also encourage Catholics to take action in local creation care issues that affect the most poor and vulnerable of the Archdiocese, such as giving our low income communities access to clean safe transportation and improved air quality.

For more information, the public can call the Office of Justice and Peace at (213) 637-7690.
